Out with the old and in with the new...

It's been a while since my last blog post, so sorry for the lack of updating. Bit of a hectic time here, with multiple things going on in the real world which well I won't go into on here.

Anyway, today's post as it is quite aptly named is "out with the old and in with the new".

On so many multiple levels at the moment I have things changing in my life. With Imbolc (or Candlemas - dependant on faith) just gone, I've decided it's time for a bit of a Spring Clean.

The house we are in at the moment is rented, and like most rented properties nowadays, it's hard to determine what you can actually do to the place in regards to decoration. Luckily most of the house is in a beige/magnolia colour on the walls, and same for the carpet, (give or take the blue hallway).This makes it much easier to accessories.

So in my endeavour to streamline our busy and hectic life, I want to bring a calm, clean, bright and organised look to our home. I have recently been scouring the web looking for ideas, and well I had to share some of the brilliant things I've found out there. Especially as there are lots that will apply to crafty people like me who just can't resist the urge to *ooo pretty shiny thing - must buy...* :).

Over the next few days I will be making a post per room of ideas for the house with neat storage solutions, and bright but light colour schemes (including the garden and garage!).

This time of year is perfect for Spring Cleaning (although not yet out of winter properly as the sow falling is prooving...). I always try to have a good declutter of everything around Imbolc, and a good deep clean of the whole house if possible too. Its a good time to do it now as, well the weather isn't too great and everyone tends to spend more time in the house, so ultimately there is usually more time to do it (give or take procrastination on the internet ;) ). It also then makes it easier come Ostara/Easter time to have a good whisk around again, when I tend to give the

outdoors a bit more a spruce instead - things like washing windows, cleaning doors and frames, new flowers and veg growth that kind of thing.

For those that are wondering what I am jabbering on about when I talk about Imbolc, well then I better explain.

As you are all most likely aware now I class myself as a Pagan. The word Pagan comes from the term Paganus meaning country dweller or rustic if you are interested :) - Quite a few other derivations, but I like this simple description to be honest.

Pagans in general celebrate 8 major festivals, all in keeping with the seasons and nature. Names of each festival change, but in general they all boil down to the same thing. A celebration of the Wheel of the Year, the seasons and how they are progressing and affecting our lives day by day.

I use the following names and tend to roughly celebrate on these dates (northern hemisphere) for each of the festivals:

Samhain - 31st October - New Year - Passing over into the winter months - Final Harvest Festival

Yule - 21st December - Shortest day of the year - Solstice - MidWinter

Imbolc - 2 February - Beginning of Spring - Festival of Bride/Brigid

Ostara - 21st March - Vernal Equinox - When night and day are equal leading up to longest day

Beltane - 1st May - May Day - Fire Festival and traditionally when the youngsters got together around the Maypole

Litha - 21st June - MidSummer - Solstice - Longest day of the year

Lughnassagh - 1st August - Harvest Festival begins

Mabon - 21st September - Autumnal Equinox - When night and day are equal leading up to shortest day - 2nd Harvest Festival

IMBOLC

Imbolc is an ancient festival, Celtic in origin, and considered one of the greater Wiccan sabbats. It is celebrated on the night of February 1st in the northern hemisphere.

The primary purpose of Imbolc is to celebrate Spring's impending replacement of Winter. In this sense, Imbolc may be seen as a spiritual alternative to the secular celebration of New Year's Eve.

At New Year's Eve, we often see the image of old, bearded

Father Time replaced with a young baby. Father Time represents the old, outgoing year, and the baby celebrates the year just born. At Imbolc, we have similar imagery; an old crone represents the outgoing year, and turns things over to a young maiden.

Fertility, of course, plays a part here. The frozen earth is incapable of growing things, just as the old crone has grown incapable of producing offspring. This barrenness is replaced by the warm return of Spring, making the earth once again fertile, symbolized by the fertile young maiden.

Well I have decided today with the need to increase my stock ready for the next craft fayre's I'm doing (fingers crossed there will be more people this time!) and for my on-line shops.

So with this immanent date approaching for the Christmas Craft Fayre's I am going to set myself a challenge!
The challenge is to add one hand crafted item a day onto Folksy & Etsy & the Website, for the next month! A challenge indeed as my main work (Software Testing for anyone that is interested) is beyond hectic at the moment!

I'd love to extend this challenge over the coming months through Christmas and into the New Year maybe focusing on a range a month so keep an eye out for new items along the way :)

Craft Fayres the up and the downs...

Well I've had my very first Craft Fayre in Wolverhampton and well, it wasn't the best. Though the stall looked pretty snazzy. :)

However although I didn't sell much (lack of footfall, I think I may offer to help a lot more with advertising next time...), it was a good experience as I met some local crafter's and got to see more of the crafts that are dominating the scenes at the moment. Gotta love the knitwear.

It was a shame about the lack of people but in a way it helped me get a bit of perspective on going to the fayre's. To say I was a little stressed the days running up to it was well an understatement. I was constantly worried I wouldn't have enough stock and that I had forgot important details such as pricing things up before I went.As it was I found it hard to find exactly where it was, when it came to it so was running a tad late. But with my band of merry helpers (thank you mum, dad and Si!) we got the stall looking very snazzy if I do say so myself.

In the end all the stressing I had done I think would have put me off more than the lack of people if it weren't for the merry band of helpers there to calm me down and encourage me.

All in all an experience both good and bad, and hey not much sold this time but I now have plenty to add to my online shops and for the next fayre. So time to get taking pictures for Folksy and Etsy. In the meantime, why not check out my shops where I have some lovely runes and tiaras for sale! :D

The best accompaniment to crafting...

Every time I sit down to do some crafting there is always something I just can not do without, and that's a good brew (and maybe a biscuit too :p).

On that note, *raises her cuppa* many cheers and thanks to collaich1 and dids for being my first followers :). I hope I can pass on useful tips and information and you continue to enjoy the blog!

A brew (in whatever form you take it) is a wondrous thing, not only does it warm you up and give you that mmm homely feeling but there is also nothing quite like sitting down with friends and family and nattering over a good brew. I'm lucky to have a partner that has this love for a brew as much as me, and was even luckier when he came home from a recent trip to China with some lychee and green loose leaf tea! mmm...Now apart from the absolute yumminess of them it also put me in mind of when I used to practice the art of tea leaf reading. I was absolutely aghast when I tried again and found that I could barely remember all the meanings of all the shapes! So in an endeavour to put this right, along with my endeavour to remember that practice always makes perfect, I started looking into my old notes and diaries, and got out the teapot and loose leaf tea.

For those that are interested tea leaf reading, also known as Tasseomancy or Tasseography dates back over 5000 years and is generally noted to have originated in Eastern Europe and China. Where symbols or pictures can be seen you will often find some form of divination to match, from anything such as dancing flames, clouds, oil in water, mirror images, animals, leaves, to more man made forms such as general art, symbols (e.g. runes and oghams) and card sets (such as tarot or tree wisdom cards).

Divination can be a powerful tool for shaping a future, however for all readings I do be it tarot, runes, tea leaves or crystallomancy I always make sure that the seeker is fully aware that future divination and what is seen are only guides and certain paths that can be taken. I fully believe we are all able to shape our destiny and that there are many paths we can take, however much sometimes we may believe or can see only one path before us.

Anyway back to the tea leaves…

Generally you will find that tea leaf reading is one of the least expensive forms of divination. All that is really required to begin is loose tea (1/2 teaspoon), hot water and a cup (and saucer – as this is generally useful as spillage occurs quite regularly and in fact can be seen as good luck if the tea leaves spill over the side). Any tea leaves will do, and you can find them from pretty much any local shops or supermarkets, and even online.

So to begin, and if you are beginner this is a must really, you will need a general list of pictures/symbols and the generality of their meaning. I like ones specifically with pictures as sometimes discerning between a goat and a dog when looking at a blob of tea leaves is not the easiest thing to do.

The seeker (i.e. person you are doing the reading for), who should be seated as near to the seer or reader as possible, is asked to stir the loose tea with a spoon and then place it in the cup. Of course if you are doing this for yourself then obviously you do both parts, reader and seeker. Hot water is now added and the seeker focuses on the future while stirring it. At this stage there can already be telling signs of what is to come for the seeker. For instance if bubbles float to the top it can mean a kiss or some form of money coming to the seeker. If a stalk or leaf floats to the surface it indicates a visitor - a hard stem is a man and a soft one a woman, multiple leaves can indicate a couple or family.

Then the seeker drinks the tea leaving a small amount in the bottom of the cup, if too much water is left and cannot be drained further this indicates a very changeable future, and the reader can induce that multiple or large changes will be occurring within the following month. If the tea is too strong it shows a new friendship in the future but if it is too weak it indicates the end of one. As with tarot reading and Ogham reading the longer the seeker holds the divination tool, so in this case the cup and concentrates, the better the reading will be. The residue in the cup is now swirled by the seeker three times clockwise.

Now there are two types of readings that can be done, one purely in the cup and one that includes the use of a saucer (if you have one). The difference is simply that if the tea residue is too wet (i.e. changeable future) it is easier and will give a better reading with a saucer as it allows the tea leaves to drain off a bit before the reader commences. You may make a wish of the heart if you use a saucer, (the seeker touches the edge of the saucer with the cup and wish a wish of the heart and turn it over immediately onto the saucer) where once tipped onto the saucer if there is a star shape left within the cup your wish will be granted.

Specifics to saucer readings: If the tea will not drain properly and tears or drops of tea can be seen, it is said that there may be much sadness in the seekers future.

The near, inner side of the cup contains the fortune. On the far, outer side of the cup are the thoughts and the issues that remain very much up in the air. The handle of the cup can represent work or business matters.

It is standard practice to view the cup as a time period of one month but some readers can see your whole lifetime. Things that are half way up will occur in two weeks, further down in three to four weeks. The top represents today and the rim is now. Symbols right at the rim represent the first thing in the morning. If it is a leaf or stalk at the rim it will be shocking news. Anything pooling at the bottom of the cup represents problems in the present.

The size and clearness of the image or symbol is very important. If they disappear immediately after being read it is indicative of things that are starting to no longer matter or be of significance. Stalks and sprigs represent people - tightly curled ones are male and loosely curled ones are female. If standing upright the stalks represent straightforward people unless there is some type of a weapon around them - then it is a warning to be careful of them. Crossed stalks indicated people who are annoyed and frustrated and the other symbols will clarify the reasons. Sideways stalks represent untrustworthy people.

It can be downloaded for free, however if you want a more advanced version with full instructions, designs etc on how to read tea leaves there will be one made available in the coming month on my shop website:- www.mysticspirit.co.uk. I’ll post up here once it’s completed as it is currently a work in progress along with some hand crafted tea sets. Each of the sets will be individual and unique with separate designs on each.

Once the reading is complete then there are a few things you can do with the tea leaves, each with a meaning. Throwing them on the ground is said to ward off evil spirits. Placing them at the back of the fireplace or woodstove is said to ward off poverty. I sometimes prefer to place them under a tree or with some plants, as I like to give a bit back to nature and the remaining nutrients that feed the plant will be gratefully accepted. If the plants flourish it’s said to bring happiness, health and prosperity.

Crops in Pots

Mmmm.... nom.... there is nothing quite like, or as satisfying as growing your own fruit and veg (give or take when the white moth flys eat all your kale ... grrr).

Having recently moved and now with a garden with a lawn and two small patios *squeal in excitement* we (my partner and I) have been experimenting with different crops in pots! As it's rented accomodation still we are limited on digging the lawn and mature beds up to make room for a veg patch, so in the absence of this we decided pots were definitely the way to go.

Currently as it stands we have good collection of carrots, shallots, spring onions, lettuce, rocket, spinage, spring cabbage (give or take the silly caterpillers), kale (well we did have before i went out this morning to find it devored by white moth fly caterpillers...once again grrrrr), chillis - of the hot wax, peruvian purple, jaalpeno and mmm some bog standard F1 variety that name escapes me, and tomatoes.

Peruvian Purple chillis, grown from seed, they are just an amazing colour on both the fruit and plant!

Added to that we also have a herb pot garden, with Rosemary, Thyme x2, Mint, Chives, Basil, Tarragon, Oregano, Sage and... and... hmmm there is one more i'm sure but oh well.

All in all some lovely veg! Ooo and i forgot the gooseberry and strawberry plants (which are trying to take over everything currently.

So with this in mind I have been contemplating a larger variety, and maybe utilise the height space we have up against the walls for things such as potatoes and parnips. We've had thought about strawberry patches on the garage roof too, which could prove quite prosperous dependant on the birds view of course.

Growing your own food is so enjoyable and I actively encourage all of my friends to have a go, even if its just with some salad leaves and herbs. It really isnt as hard as some people make it out to be. Pots are briliant for this as it's such an easy way for people without open soil or much space to grow things. The chilli's (nicknamed the chilli farm due to he amount that germinated from seed earlier this year) grow indoors and on the bay windowsill in pots. It brings in so much life and some absoulutely gorgeous colours as the fruit and leaves turn, into the living room.

Growing fruit and veg also helps me I find to connect to nature a lot more. Its easier to understand the seasons when you grow plants, especially edible ones! The 8 festivals of Samhain, Yule, Imbolc, Ostara, Beltane, Litha, Lughnassadh and Mabon, suddenly come into their own, and it feels wonderful to celebrate them with produce of the season, especially when you've put the hard work in yourself!

Contemplations of woods and wands...

Wandering towards the supermarket today i was looking at all the trees rusting in the wind, and all the twists and turns of the twigs and branches, and it got me to thinking about creating more wands.

The first wand i ever created was my own personal wand using a fallen birch tree branch, and it turned out reasonably well. After that i have made quite a few out of beech, birch, pine and oak, with my latest and last of the current bunch made out of ivy. The piece of wood for the ivy wand inparticular really caught my eye lying on the forest floor. It had lovely natural twist and the light and dark colouration of the wood is really complimentary to the shape.

This was my first wand using ivy wood and is the last of the current wand batch. It was the mottled colouration and twists that caught my eye and led to its natural carved shape.

I decided for this wand to simply use the natural shape, and stripped it of the leftover bark that remained on it (there wasn't much left) to show the beautiful colours that showed up underneath. I always find with pieces like this that it is best to left the wood do the talking and show itself off without the need for added extras such as gemstones, feathers and ribbons.

Generally I use a mixture of sanding paper starting with a rough, course paper and moving onto a selection of smoother papers with finer grains. This always helps to get a really smooth finish. For the Ivy wand though i left the wood slightly rougher as the grain really brings out the ivy wood colours.

After sanding the wood down I coat it three times with a homemade beeswax polish, to create a lovely shine.

Carved to a tip to compliment the flowing twists. The tip was sanded more to bring out the lighter colour of the underlying wood, while the stem was left with a courser wood grain.

Woods are sacred to many relgions and faiths, and it features especially within the Nature Religions and ways/paths of life. Wood is a material often used for ritual tools such as wands, altar pieces, athames and goblets, divination tools such as Oghams and Runes, and in its living form in plant magic, for the promotion of life and abundance.

It is said to cut a branch from a tree is like taking a piece of the tree or bush's life energy. Often if someone is in need of wooden material and follow a pagan/nature religions path, and have no option but to cut from a living tree, they will make an offering to the tree/bush, and do all they can to heal the plant.

Different plants have different energies. Ivy for instance has a Masculine energy, and can be good in promoting determination, strength, optimism, spiritual growth. When crafted into a wand, Ivy is a fine wand for protection, good against wayward spirits and angry elementals, ensuring success in business and all new endeavors.

As well as wands and runes I love to experiment with offcuts and I am in the middle of crafting some beautiful Silver Birch candle holders, which may just have to be a main feature on my mantlepiece this Yule and Christmas season!

Silver birch is one of my favourite woods to work with and I almost always leave some part of the stunning bark on. As well as the candle holders i have some smaller offcuts perfect for coasters, hmm, but to leave them plain or to add some designs using pyrography. Ooo the choices :).

Hmmm... I think it's time to make things again!

Well i decided it was time for an overhaul on the blog design, and it's definitely more me I think! Absoulutly loving the new brown, it matches the green for my banner really well!

I've now added two extra pages with one specifically for updates on my shop and folksy pages, and one for tutorials on crafting techniques.

My homepage will focus on craft interests and recent makes, information and interesting facts on different pagan paths, festival activites etc that i have learnt along the way, finding my own path in the huge encompassing routes of paganism.

Well after much palaver with paypal and loss of buttons *cry*, I've been able to put up my site and set it live.

BUT... only a few categories have been able to be set live at the moment. I'll be working throughout the day to get the rest up but having to create my buttons all over again, so i hope you can all bear with me - these trials are sent to try us heh?!

I'm aiming to have all categories available by tomorrow evening so here's hoping all goes ok the second time around.

So, stock control, paperwork and finances sorted. Products ready to be packaged, orders put in for beads and pearls and lots of shiny bits. Pages written and ready to publish, catagories written and ready to be published.

Its all go in my household at the moment i tell you!

This weekend is natural collection day, which means i'll be wandering the wilderness and my garden looking for special objects and sustainable materials to make into unique and special items for all and sundry.

Well the checklist for the go live day has got plenty of ticks on it, so the website is well on its way to completion ready for it's big day. (I feel like I should be baking a cake to celebrate!)

Hello Everyone! - New Website Developments!

Well on my first blog post i thought it was only right that i let you know about Mystic Spirit and what's happening with Mystic Spirit and in particular the website.

Mystic Spirit was established in 2009 to provide unique hand-crafted and custom made items, specialising in Pagan Crafts and Supplies. Since its opening Mystic Spirit has grown and now includes a new range of wedding/hand-fasting tiara's, jewellery and hand-fasting ritual tools. While continuing it's original and popular lines of hand crafted and custom made Pagan Crafts and Supplies, Mystic Spirit upholds it's ideals for quality in its products and excellent customer service.

In an endeavour to reduce the carbon footprint and be more environmentally conscious, Mystic Spirit aims to use 95% recycled materials in our packaging. Where possible waste is minimised, by using all of the offcuts of materials in other projects and products. Along with these schemes, the Web Hosting for the website is now powered by 100% Green Power courtesy of Host Papa.

I've done a complete revamp on the shop and design of the website to make it more sleek and easier to use with a lighter and brighter colour scheme.

I have three new tiara's that will be up in the website as soon as possible and also on Etsy, and some new jewellery pieces too!
